Rats and mice appear externally due to many factors; including accumulations of rubbish, areas providing harbourage, and defective drains. It's a fact of life that they will always be close by, ready to share our homes and environment. Both rats and mice are not capable of surviving in extreme cold conditions. Like all warm blooded mammals they need to retain their body heat when the weather turns cold. This is when they seek shelter in our homes, outbuildings and places of work.
Prevention is better than cure
It's a fact that rats and mice love to explore. Opportunists by nature, they will take full advantage of any gaps and holes in buildings in there quest for survival. Once inside if conditions are favourable they will quickly become established. Many of the infestations we deal with could have been avoided or minimised if a little attention had been paid to external areas prior to the event. In order for rodents to enter your property they need suitable access. Careful attention should be paid to the general condition of brickwork, doors, airbricks and drains. Rats can usually gain ingress through a hole as small as a 'fifty pence piece' Whilst if you can push a pen through any hole you find, then such an aperture is large enough to allow mice access..
Rodent proofing can vary from filling a few holes, to a full scale assault on a recurring rodent problem.
